About Duane Cutlip

He still writes preneed policies for families this week.

That's the thing that matters most. Not the nearly 20 years. Not the credentials. The fact that Duane is still in the field — still sitting across the table from families, still navigating the same conversations, still walking into funeral homes every week. That's what makes him different from a consultant who studied preneed and what makes every recommendation he makes real instead of theoretical.

Built from the Field Up

Duane Cutlip's career in preneed was built inside funeral homes — not in a consulting firm or a carrier's regional office. He has personally written thousands of preneed policies, trained counselors, built programs from the ground up, helped funeral homes navigate carrier transitions, and worked through NC Board of Funeral Service examinations. Most of that work didn't come from a marketing campaign. It came from funeral homes that needed someone they could trust and knew Duane was the right call.

Over nearly 20 years, he has been involved with more than nine funeral homes across North Carolina in various capacities — some for a single seminar, some for a season of coverage, some as their primary preneed resource for years at a stretch. The work has ranged from emergency fill-ins on no notice to sustained program management to training days with a full staff. The common thread: the funeral home needed something handled and Duane handled it.

Licensed in North Carolina

Duane holds a Preneed Funeral Director license and a Funeral Director license in North Carolina — both current, both active. He is deeply familiar with N.C.G.S. Chapter 90, Article 13D, the statutes that govern every preneed contract written in the state, as well as the NC Board of Funeral Service's examination process, record-keeping requirements, and trust accounting standards.

His work spans the Triangle, eastern NC, and the Piedmont. He understands that a rural funeral home in Granville County operates differently from one in Wake County, and that the right approach for each is shaped by the market, the community, and the families being served.

Program Fit Over Convenience

Duane's orientation is toward what works for the funeral home and its families — not toward the path of least resistance. He has spent nearly 20 years in enough programs, with enough different products, to know that the right answer for one funeral home is often wrong for another. What he brings is the experience to tell the difference.

He is straightforward when he doesn't think a particular approach is the right fit — and he walks away from situations where he senses that the pressure to close a deal is outrunning the value being delivered. Funeral homes that have worked with Duane consistently describe the relationship as collaborative, not transactional.

Before the Funeral Profession

Before entering funeral service, Duane was a small business owner with a background in corporate finance and business operations. That background shapes how he looks at preneed programs: not just as a sales activity, but as a business function with measurable performance, cash flow implications, and long-term valuation impact.

He has stayed current with the technology changes affecting the profession — CRM systems, digital lead generation, online inquiry flows — and helps funeral homes modernize their preneed operations where it actually moves the needle, without overcomplicating something that should fundamentally be about relationships.

Personal

Duane has lived in the greater Triangle area for over 30 years. He and his wife Angie have two daughters. He is an active member of his church and serves as an ARRL Volunteer Examiner — helping community members earn their amateur radio licenses at no cost.

He got into preneed because he saw what it does for families: removes a burden from the worst days of their lives, protects people they love from decisions they weren't prepared to make, and honors what they actually wanted. He believes the same about funeral homes with good preneed programs — that they're not just selling a service, they're protecting their community's families and their own legacy.
